EXTRAORDINARY MISSTATEMENTS.
« . PLAIN WORDS BY MR. MASSEY. According to llio Ministerial journal ifi Wellington, Mt. W. 11. Field, M.P., when ho met his constituents at Levin on Monday evening, staled that:— "The outstanding features of tho Opposition's policy were inaccuracy, unfairness, and mud-slinging, but its real policy was this—to repeal all the statutes that gave- every adult man and woman a vote, and then to tako one. by one. tho various beneficial Acts jxisscd by the. present Government since tho year 1S!)1. The Opposition strenuously fought all those Acta in every possible way, and ho was confident that tho people, of the country would not hand over the administration, of the Liberal measures to such a party." Interviewed last ovening, Mr. Massy stated that ho had seen tho reported utterance of Mr. Field (from which tho above is an extract), and v;ould like to think ■that the.ro had been some mistake in reporting Mr. Field's speech. "But if \ that' gentleman or anyone else says," added tho Leader of tho Opposition, "that our 'real policy is to repeal r tho statutes tlrat gave every adult man and woman a vote, , - and 50 on, then a statement is being made which is tho reverse of a fact, and which is so absurd as to almost carry its own refutation. If this is the eort of 6tuff which Government supporters find it necessary to put forward, then the Government must be in a very bad way. I thought Sir. Field was above that sort of thing, and I am sorry to find that such, is not the case."
