That accounts amounting to .£12,002 13s. 7d. be passed for payment. The cuinniittee reported: That they havo reconsidered the basis of the valuation lor the sale of the strip of land at Salamanca Koad to the Wellington. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and have approved same, and-they recommend that no reduction be made in such valuation. The adoption of tlie report was agreed to. POWER STATION AXD TRAMWAYS. The Power Station and Tramways Committeo recommended: 'J hat a tramway pass bo granted to the nurse employed by we Society of .St. Vinct'ilt lie faul. That a new tramway stop be established at Te Wliiti Street, lvilbirnie, and the existing stop at L-eslic Street be shifted to liose Street. That the visiting football teams from the. Auckland and Christchiirch tramway clubs be granted the same privileges regarding travelling on the car?, etc., as were granted to the Wellington City Council's tramways football team on the occasion of their visit to Auckland last year. That the city engineer be empowered tj deal with a question of alterations to premises, rendered necessary through the carrying out of the Wadestown tramway works. That the petitioners for the extension of tho electric lighting mains down tho Happy Valley Eoail bo infornml that the council regret that they cannot see their way to carry out tho work at the present time. The committee reported as under: "We have considered the rescinding motion of which notice was given b.v Councillor niudniar~h, and which was referred to us by the council at its last meeting, with reference to tho proposal to s-pend the sum of X2BOO on a bath-house nt Lyall Bay, of which amount half is to bo charged to tramways account. The committee recommend that the council rescind the resolution as regards this proposed charge on the tramways .account, us they cannot recommend that this expense be incurred under present circumstances. If the building is to bo erected, they recommend that the matter be referred to the Finance Committee for report as' to ways and means." The adoption of the report was agreed to. ABATTOIRS AND PUBLIC HEALTH. The Abattoirs, Milk Supply, and Public Health Committee recommended :~ Thnt the council's olh'iers havo full power to act in connection with all nuisances of an offensive nature and of extreme urgcucr affecting the public health. .' That the various butchers and meat export slaughter-houses be credited with the amount of surplus shown on the abattoirs balance-sheet in proportion to the quantities of stock on which fees were paid during the preceding year, and that charges for the uto of the abattoir for the current year be made ngninsit the amount* credited until absorbed, as recommended by the city engineer and city solicitor. That the following scale -of fees for the use of tho abattoir, exclusive of the cost of inspection, as recommended by the city engineer, ho approved:—Cattle, Is. Bii. each; sheep, .Ikl.; lambs, SJd.j pigs, Is. 5Jd.; calves, UJtl.
The cnmmitlcp reported thnt they had been waited on by the Conciliation Commissioner aud tho representative of the Union in connection with the slaughtermen's dispute, and have instructed tho city engineer to report on Hip suggestion that, the abattoir be equipped with electric fans for cooling purposes. The report was adopted. \ BATHS AXD DESERVES. Tho Baths and Reserves Committee recommended :— That the request of the Noivtown Lawn Tenuis Chib aud the Northland School Committee for trees and shrubs for planting on Arbor Day be seceded to, on condition that the grounds are prepared for planting and fenced to the satisfaction of ■ the Reserves Superintendent. ■ That the Superintendent of Reserves be empowered to engage an additional six men for gorse-grubbing operations on tho Town Belt. That seats be erected in the Band Rotundas nt Nowtown Park and the Botanical Gardens, at an estimated cost of £8. That the. city engineer be instructed to deposit the spoil from Kelburne Parade on to the south end of the fiat ground at Kelburne Turk, in order to facilitate the levelling up of the reserve. The report was adopted. STRKEI , LAMriS. On the recommendation of the By-laws, Fire Brigades, and Lighting Committee, it was decided that tho following street lamps be erected, as recommended by the electrical engineer:—Derwont Street. Island Bny, one lamp; Jackson Street, Island Bay, two lamps; Karepa Street, Brooklyn, one lamp. BUILDING REGULATIONS. A motion was put forward by Councillor Cameron at last night's meeting of the City Council as follows:—"That tho city engineer and city solicitor be instructed to draw up a by-law or by-laws, giving the council power to prevent the erection of any private latrine on any site where the council deem its presence would bo objectionable, also giving the council power to prevent the erection or use of any building in future for factory or other purpose where they considered that the smell emitted would be objectionable; also giving the council power to prevent the erection of any building that they consider would be unsightly, undesirable, or depreciating to any lorality.' . The motion was carried.
