LECTURE AT THE ARTS CLUB.
An interesting lecture upon "Sincerity in Art" was given at the Arts Club last evening by Mr. La Trobe, before a very appreciative audience. Mr. Rayward, tho president of tho club, presided. In the course of his address, Mr. La Trobo said that sometimes faulty construction of the eyesight accounted for the misrepresentations of nature that are lo bo met with in paintings, and again it might be lack of education. The tendency lo specialise nowadays also caused a deterioration in art, as people bent all their energies upon the one thing in which they wished to cxctl. Nature was sincere, but the more a llower or plant was cultivated, the more it was departing from the sincerity of Nature. Beauty in plant-life was not for the edification of man only, but it was also created to assist in the life work of that plant. At tho conclusion nf the lecture a hearty vote of thnnks u> Mr. La Trobe for the pleasure ho had afforded those, present, was carried, and brief speeches of appreciation were given by. Mr. Linley Richardson and Mr. 11. M. Gore. Next Thursday evening, instead of the lecture promised by the Hon. A. T. Ngata, it musical evening; will ho given.
