ANOTHER DETECTIVE SERGEANT.

DETECTIVE CASSELLS PROMOTED. Detective John Jnmes Cassells of Wellington, who is under order? lo transfer to Xapier, has been promoted lo the rank of detective-sergeant. Detective Cassells joined the .Armed Constabulary at Wellington in 1893. and did duty here for 18 months, being the first constable m Hir> Jlount Cook Police Station when il was opened. From Wellington he was transfcrctl to Wangauui, and whilst there was appointed an acting-detective by Commissioner Tiinhritlgc, and transferred lo Chrisichurch. Afler four years' service in tho southern city lie was brought lo Wellington, and has been stationed here ever since. In WOO 31 r. Casselb was promoted a full detective. During his stay in Wellington Detective Caswlls had ilono excellent work over a series of vears. One of the most notorious cases lie handled w.is '.he nrresl. of four amicd burglars, who each rec&ivcil IS years' imprisonment for numerous offences committed in the cily. On another occasion, in company with Detective Bro'wrg, he arrested two notorious burglars, who had broken into some 10 or M) dwellings, and the goods recovered were valued at ,£7OO. The offenders were each sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. In 1000 Detective CaEsells was sent lo England with Sir Joseph Ward, us the result of a. threat stated to have been made against (|)p Prime .Minister's life by an ex-Xew Zealandcr, then resident in England.
