THE TURF. 4

NOTES AND COMMENTS. TRACK WORK AT TREXTHAM. There was a heavy frost at Trenthom yestpnhy morning, but it was beautifully fine for the track' work. A large number of horse-, had arrived the previous evening, and there were upwards of a hundred on tho track. The whole of the work was done, on the sand track, except Hid schooling of a few hurdle horses. Tho outside of the course proper was not. open. Tho best, gallop ot the morning was, by a coincidence, the first in which thti horses were pitted against the watch. Peary (Julian) and Ainsdale (F. D. Jones) run four furlongs in SOJsec. This is tho best time recorded on the sand track since it has been in use, AinsdaU , , who will carry the Karair.u colour-, in the Trial Plate, was afterwards cantered once round. Another good gallop was that in which Epsom Lass (Gray) easily held To Wahuroa (R. Barlow) safe over half a mile, run in 5-hoc. Epsom, Lass is on her first visit to Trontham. She, is a nice little mnre by Hotchkiss, and a half-sister tn that useful performer, Lady Menschikoff. she ran fairly well last season, but her only victory appears to have been when sho beat n bi;; field in the Papakura. hup. It is worthy of note that, when she ast started at Ellerslie in June, she had lflst. 51b. in the Ranfurly Welter, and unld Circle, 9st. 41b. Now (in the Miramiir Handicap at Trentham on Saturday), tiold Circle will have to carry JOst. lib., and hjtsam Lass only Oit. It looks as if tho latter has been exceptionally well treated. Kopek (Murtagh) and Kina (Trail!) ran live turlougs together in imin. 5 i-S SGC biimlar time was recorded over the same distance by John, St. Gate, and Taft. Uie first-named seems to be well fitted to stand the M inter Hurdles on SaturSt -- / P r etel ' sb, »-S (Traill) and Te Ivahuranßi (Murtagh) took over a fecond longer to cover live furlongs. Bank pleased by getting to the end of six furlongs in Imin. ISsec. Wauchope (G ray) j llmpe(| off at th .j manner that ho scarcely appeared to be going against time, but the watch showed lniin. 40Jsec. for the last seven furlon-s -a most attractive gallop. Electrakoff sprinted down the straight, and then went round at a good sound pace. Flitavay did useful work on the sand 111 company with Somersault. Wimracra (Hercock) went twice round, and was looking well. Merrie Zealand (W. Eyan) also did a couple of rounds. , Dreadless did long solid work in sweaters, being accompanied over the last round by Morocambe. Ariom, Bracken, My Lawyer, and Meroze also did useful work. The steeplechase favourite,' Paritutu (T. Pine), got over 0. mile in lniin. 57sec. without any trouble. Hoanga. Tyrannic, Eiya, North East, Waipiitcre. Tβ Ku, Ht. Albert, Kremlin, Don Quex, Lovell, Oolden Water, Captain Jingle, and a large number of other jumpers also did useful work on tho sand. The flat horses, not previously mentioned, included: Semaphore, Septimus, Turna, Optinieform, Kingswell, Lady Fran, Amaru, and others. Ribstone Pippin and Salopin, who had been schooled over the big fences 011 Wednesday, did a slow round together on tho sand, and were then taken on to the course proper to have another attempt over three of tho big fences. -On this occasion L. Hill, of the Porirua stable, rotlo lEibslonu Pippin, and Murtagh had the mount on the hunter. Salopin jumped well, and ltibstoue Pippin's display was a distinct improvement on that of tho previous morning, thouph he wns slow in negotiating tho sod wall. Hill will now liavp the mount on tho Au?tralianbred gcldins in the Hack anil Hunters' Steeplechase to-morrow.

Longner (N. Campbell) jumped a couple of hurdles in good style. Compass (Flynn), Torb«lle (Trail.), and Fond Memory were associated in a round over live hurdle?. Compass gave a good display, and \v;is murk, too fast, for the other pair. Bollm ■(Julian) jumped. "one of the fdiooiin.r hurdles rather carefully, ami then traversed a round of the sand track. Nappcr (Julian) was sent over a couple of hurdles down the hack, and no fault could ho. found with his stylo of jumping* St. Bill, with 'a light boy in the" paddle, was tried over one of tho schooling fences. lie ran off at the first attempt, hut afterwards cleared it well, and th?n went once round on the f.aiul. Xavier (A., M'C'onnon) and Egypt (Crawford) .were companions of six of the schooling hurdles. Egypt ran away from his companion at tho start, and jumped splendidly all tho way. Xavier's display was not so good. Sylvia Maid (Walfon) negotiated several hurdles in pleasing style, without o companion. G. Price reached Treiitham yfsterday. with Kilosteri, Blakncy. and Kopitno. Ccrazon, one of the favourites for the Grand National Steeplechase, is now located at Trcntham, and is in the pink of condition. An idea prevails in some quarters that list. 101b. will prove too much for tho Great Northern winner, but the fact that ho stands nearly sixteen hands, and is so solidly built, is an argument agaiust that theory. Besides, at Hastiii-s last year ho carried list. 131b. to victory in a mile- and three-quarter hurdle r.".co, and covered tho distance in 3min. 19 >i-ssec. Anions tho defeated horses was Land o' Xod (Dst.), v;ho had won at Ashhurst_ a couple of days before in fast time. No, tho weight will not trouble Corazon, but— Antarctic might. The Native. Eva, Mahara. and Winiata were brought down to Trentham last night.. • . , Monologue was yesterday scratched for the Trial Plate, and Fleet.wcek was withdrawn from all; engagements. St. Amelia is considered nn unlikely starter in the Steeplechase at Trentham, and some doubt seems to exist as to whether or not To Arai will see, the post. Before leaving; Wanganui for Trenthain, John is reported to have dono an excellent gallop over six furlongs. Lares, who is a half-brother (by the Lochiel horse Clytus) to Penates, injured his foot badly recently, and. as he will be, unable to race for some time, ho will do a season at the stud. In the summer C. Pritchard may place tho horso in work again. Acceptances for the Winter Cup, Grand National Steeplechase, Grand National Hurdle Race, ami general entries closo with the secretary (Mr. W 11. E. Wanklyn), of the Canterbury Jockey Club, today (Friday), at 8 p.m. The Wellington Bating Club notify that bookmakers, turf financial agents, their clerks or agents, and all persons disqualified under New Zealand rules of racing will not be allowed on the club's property at Troutham at tho winter meeting.
