JOTTINGS FROM WANQANUI.
«. STORM-WATER IN IUVER. (By Tclecraph.-Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, July 11. A considerable rise occurred in the river as a consequence of yesterdays heavy warm rain which appears to nave been general over nil the imand districts. Tho storm-water, which was much discoloured, came down at the rale pi between lour .to lour and n half miles ail hour, but did not rise above the banks except in one or two low-lying places. The tributary crocks overflowed in many places, however, and considerable areas ot llat land are under water. The Hood is now receding rapidly without having done any serious damage. During the progress of tho "fresh" great quantities oi drittwood came down the river, some ot which caught the piles of the two bridges and subjected them to enormous pressure, but the structures stood splendidly, and gave no sign of the shock beyond a slight viuration. At i'lpiriki a rise of 22 feet' was reported, but tho latest advice states Hint the river is now falling. In town the water did not rise higher than within five feet of the level of tfcv 1004 liood mark. At .the Wnnganni Hast Borough Council meeting lsst evening it was reported that satisfactory arrangements could bo made for getting water from the town supply as soon as the new Wcstmero reservoir had boon finished. The council decided to at once proceed with tho arrangement of preliminary details, and appointed Mr. A. (i. Jluir, engineer, to carry out the work.
