MELANESIAN MISSION.
The Melanesian Mission steamer Southu crn Cross returned to Auckland on Saturday ai'lcriioon last from her periodical visit to Norfolk Island, and the niissioa sUitions of Melanesia, after an absence of three months. The vessel visited a 1 the stations, including Norfolk Island, and those in the New Hebrides, feauta Cruz, and the Solomon Islands, blw collected the missionaries at the various stations, and landed them «t Gavuto, where a conference was held, After tno conference the Southern Cross left Gavuto on .luno fi for Norfolk Inland, landing the missionaries at their respective stations on the way. She arrived back at Norfolk Island on July 5, and took her departure the same day for Auckland; Her voyage throughout was practically uneventful. An incident occurreil at Santa Cruz just before the Southern Cross reached that place. A native teacher named "Ben, who had bs.en left in temporary ..charge of tho mission station, was attacked by a party of bush natives. The natives rushed the house, and "Pen" was struck on tho arm by a poisoned arrow. Ho was conveyed "to Norfolk Maud, where he Iβ receiving uvedical treatment.
