PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Teleeraph.—Special Correspondent.! Palmci'ton, July 11. Superintendent Warner presided at th» • annual meeting of the. l'almcrstqn Fire Brigade last night. The balance-sheet showed a substantial balance in.the members' accounts. The receipts included i' 37 in donations received from various townspeople for services rendered during the year. The report commented on the fact that the new central station had been . built during the year. It al» showed that several improvements had been carried out for the benefit of the members, and that the attendances at fires and practices had been very satisfactory. The following officers we're elected:—Superintendent Warner; foremen, C S. Rush and P. Milvcrton. and Firemen E. Little, R. Trusli, nnd G. Dredge; hon. secretary, Fireman Hitchings; treasurer, Deputy-Superintendent . BarnardnTwas decided to vole for Hotorua as the place for the 1912 Conferonce, and to use every endeavour to get tho United Fire Brigades Association to hold the 1913 conference nnd demonstration at Palmerston North. Final arrangements were made for the annual dinner, which is to Iμ held on Wednesday, July 19. An intimation was received from the Hon.- D. Buddo that he would bo present at the function. At the meeting of tho Karanga County Council to-day, it was decided, on the motion of Councillors Yoss and Bryant,'to send ii remit to the Counties' Conference in favour of hospital and harbour board delegates being elected by members of local bodies as previously, instead of by extended franchise as on the last occasion. Members of the council were very'generally opposed to (he procedure adopted at the last election. Tho council's delegate (Councillor VosO will also support any proposal coming before the conference for the regulation of the control of motor-car ■ traffic. , , ■Detective Sweeney yesterday afternoon arrested a young man named Arthur Hnrold Bmin, who has been employed as cleric at the Palmerston office of the legal firm of Messrs. Bell Gully, nnd Cooper, on charges of theft of 10s. on May 10, nnd . £W on' May 11, tho property of his emplovers. Bunn subsequently appeared befor'Mr. 'V. D. Thomson, and was remanded till Monday, bail being allowed in accused's ov;n recognisance of JC2OO, and two suritics of £Wd each.
