PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Petor.o B.irougli Council was held at the .Council Chambers Pctone, la-t evening, Present: The Mayar, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (in the chair), Councillors I!. W. Short, ,1. \V. List, .1. Wnkehain, C. P. Brocklcbank, \V. Cox, 11. V. Leader, S. V. Burridge, W. Trueman, and J. Piper. A letter was received from Mr. J. Dawson offering a house ;\ii(l two ntres ol' land, situated at Waiwefu, for the purpo ~o of a cottage hospital.—Received. The liutt ['ark Committee forwarded a ciipv of its balance-sheet for the year ending March :11, 1911, and t'.sked the council to favourably consider its application for a grant for the current year. —Received. In replying to the council's objection to the laying <'-f Ihe Wainui-o-mnta waicrmains on the Hult Poad and the Esplanade, the Town Clerk of the Wellington City Council stated that the city engineer had reported that it was impossible for him lo recommend the Petone Borough Council's proposal, viz., that the pipes should be placed on the beach side of tho Hutt Park railway line. Tho Wellington City Council desired to obviate, as far as possible, any inconvenience to the Petonc borough by the laying o! the main, but the City Engineer (Mr. Morion) failed lo see why objection should be made to the lino originally proposed. A letter was olsa received from the Minister for Public Works, stating that the council's objection to the route to be traversed by the proposed pipe, line would receive full consideration. The Mayor stated that they would be further communicated by the Wellington City Council, and it was decided to let the matter stand over in the meantime. The Treasury Department advised that the half-year's interest (£751 lis. Id.) on borough loins was now due.—Received. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Cox, to ask Dr. Harding to continue to act ns tho council's representative on the Taila Cemetery Board. Some litllo stir was caused when Councillor Short accused Councillor Piper of I divulging certain business transacted in committee. Re stated that Councillor Piper had informed the librarian, that ho (Councillor Short) had made remarks derogatory lo her. This was strenuously denied by Councillor Piper, and, after soma further passages, the matter fizzled out. It was decided to approve the engineer's suggestion recommending the grading of the water tables and the repairing of the footpath in Cuba Street. The engineer, in his report, stated that 42_ yards of metal had been delivered on AVhite's Line, and 105 yards at Cuba Street. Excavation in connection with the drainage works was now completed as far as Bolton Street, and the pipes had been laid and tested. The recent bad weather had considerably interfered with the work, which, was now progressing satisfactorily. Suitable provision had been, made to prevent breaking into the drains in the event of Cooper's Estate being subdivided. Provision had also been made for drawing off foul gases when the sewage system would be adopted. Several works in connection with the improvement of the Recreation Ground are in hand.
