BALLAST TRAIN JUMPS RAILS. IBy Telecraph.-Special Correspondent.) Palmei'ston, July 10. Tho last trains to and from Wellington were delayed till nearly midnight on Saturday night at Lougbvim and Tokomaru respectively owing to a ballast train getting off the line near the Longburn Bridge. The accident occurred a few minutes after the down New- Plymouth express had passed,'and it was not till nearly midnight that the lino could be cleared. After a good deal of trouble, tho train was "jacked" on to tho line, only to go off again as it commenced moving. Repeated efforts were made to put it on the rails, and, after a considerable amount ol trouble, this was accomplished, and tho train brought on to Palmerston. A son of Jlr. J. K. Hornblow, of Foxton, aged eleven years, was thrown from a horse on Saturday afternoon, and received severe injuries lo his head, which, it is feared, are serious. The Jlanawatu Horticultural Society has framed its schedule for Ihe spring show much on the same lines as the previous spring show. At. its next meeting tho society will consider a proposal (o offer a Challenge Cup, to be allotted to the best twelve varieties of narcissus;. At the Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., (wo boys were convicted and discharged on charges cf stealing pigeons. Sydney Gregory was fined .£5, in default 11 days' imprisonment, for assaulting Arthur Barker on .Tuly 3. Harold Tlnmson, who pleaded guilty to trespassing on private premises on Saturday night, was fined JOs. and cosls, also 10s. for resisting tho police. Several cyclists were lined 10s. each for Tiding on footpaths. For grazing sheep on the public roads, Edward Lawrence was lined 10s. and costs, amounting to £'■! 2s. Harry Wong and Charles Hutton were each sentenced to 11 days' imprisonment for disobeying maintenance orders—the men lo bo released on payment of arrears. 11. T. l-'lvger was fined £2 on a charge of breach of the drivers' award. Tho Loyal Orange Lodge held its annual church parade yesterday afternoon. The procession to the church was headed by tho Palmerston Brass Band. The Rev. .Mr. Hird presided, and addresses wow given by the Rev. Bros. I'. Jl'JJonald, of Palmerston, and S. Bailey, of Wnnganui.
