ABOUT A ROOF.
WORK AT G.P.O. SUSPENDED. For about a month now certain of t.he work in connection with the new General Post Office lias been held up, and many carpenters, labourers and others have been idle, through the failure of the Government authorities to corns to a definite agreement as to the kind of roof the great building should have. Seeing that the stone and brickwork is already up to the roof-line, it is pointed out that it is a late hour for anyone to be considering tho exact form of structure to bo adopted in building the roof. It is particularly unfortunate that this delay should occur in the middle of winter, when the artisans engaged on tho work need every penny they can earn. From what wo can gather, tho roof was to have been flat, laid down in concrete reinforced by steel beams at a certain distance apart. Now there appears to be some hesitancy as to whether or not the number of these beams should not be doubled. The contractors, Messrs, J. and A. Wilson, put in a price for the proposed strengthening of the reinforcement of the roof some time ago, but ns far as they know, 110 decision has yet been arrived at, and the work of building the roof is hung up sine die.
