FIRE ON S.S. VICTORIA.
THE OUTBREAK QUENCHED.
Shortly after 5.30 o'clock yesterday morning, a fire ivas discovered in No. 3 hold on board the Huddart, Parker and Company's steamer Victoria.
At that time the vessel was a few miles off Wellington Heads, inward beuiid from Lyttelton. Immediately the hatch was battened down and, when the vessel berthed at tho wharf the city fire brigade wero called to the scene, and, with great promptitude, arrived with the motor chemical and hose wagon. When, some of the cargo was discharged, the fire was located amongst some sacks of chaff in tho lower part of No. 3 hold. Smoke made matters very unpleasant for those working to get at tho seat of the outbreak, but, after more cargo had been discharged, the chemical sprayer was brought into operation,. this having the desired effect.
Only a few sacks of chaff appear to have suffered, but all the cargo in the hold was overhauled Lc'fore tho Victoria left for northern ports and Sydney last ovening at 4 o'clock. Spontaneous combustion is supposed to be the cause of the outbreak. _ ~
