NARROW ESCAPE OF S.S. TAKAPUNA.
IN THE BULLER RIVER. (By Teleeraph.—Press Association.) Westport, Juno 22. S.S. Takapuna, which this week took up the Mapourika's AVest Coast passenger run, had a narrow e-scarc from, disaster when entering the Bullor River to-day. There was a heavy sea on the bar, and the vessel, which nas apparently not answering her helm very well, struck the eastern wall, o.nd, from there, fihot across to the western wall. Subsequently she got into the lagoon, but drifted again into the river, where Captain C. M'Lean dropped anchor. The vessel then drifted over to the eastern training wall, and was bumping there until the Westport Coal Compauy's collier Eegulus went to her assistance, and towed her up to the wharf, assisted bj , the tug Mana. The Takapuna's stern post was carried away, and it is understood that the vessel is leaking, but the full extent of tho damage is not kiiowji. Those aboard gave credit to Captain M'Lcan for his handling of the boat in a critical position.
