RATHER INTERESTING POINTS. Dunodin, Juno 14. At tho Police. Court to-day, a suburban resident, named Carl Ruheii, was charged with obstructing a tramway conductor in the performance of his duty by refusing to show his ticket after it 'had been punched. The facts, which wero undisputed, wero that defendant was asked twice by tho conductor at the beginning of two tedious to show his ticket, but refused to do so. Mr. Callan, for the defence, raised points as follow:—(1) That, inasmuch as the conductor's duty was simply to report, and ho had reported, he could not bo said to have been obstructed; (2) that the statute provided the menus of making a new regulation, aud this had not been followed, the result being that the public did not know what conductors' duties were. He contended that the rules should have been mado in the form of a by-law, and not by regulation. Mr. AViddowton reserved judgment. .
MARKETS YET TO BE TRIED. Auckland, Juno U. The annual banquet of the Auckland Chamber oi Commerce was hold to-night, Mr. Leo Myers presiding. Lord ls-ling-ion, who was the chief guest, dwelt on the need for New Zealand extending her markets beyond Britain. There were the markets of tho Continent and Canada yet to bo exploited. Speeches wero al-o made by Mr. Tewsley (Wellington), the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. Parr), and others. CORONATION-WHAT DAY? Dunedin, June 14. A. copy of the telegram sent by the Employers' Association to the Uon. J. A. Millar with reference to the observance of holidays next week was laid before the City Council to-night, and, after discussion, it was decided to telegraph to the Minister suggesting that the Coronation celebrations be held en the Prince of Wales's birthday. At a large and representative public meeting last" evening, it was decided to recommend the borough council to construct public swimming baths as a Coronation memorial.
