I!, M'Kcnr.io presided at the weekly meeting of the local Literary and Debating Sociply nn Tuesday evening in tho Druids' [tall, when, the subject of debate was: "That a tax on land is the only right and equitable mode of taxation." Mr. J. Robertson, of Palmerston North, acted as jud»p. The following supported tha motion':—Messrs. Hinsinaii, Barclay, Trainer, Gardiner, and Sflby, while the negative side, was taken bv Messrs. Exoll, Gunning, W. Murdoch, Clayton, J. Mitchell, H. Logan, and F. AY" Venn. On a vote being taken, the audience derided agaimt the motion. The following points wero. awarded the various speakers by Mr. Robertson :—Messrs. He-.is-maii, 87; Exnll, 78; Barclay, SO; Gunning, T8; Polby, SO; Trainer, 78'; Murdoch, 73; Mitchell, fio; Clayton, 75; Gardiner, 73; Logan, 67; Venn, 77. The five speakers who supported the motion srored 407 point:-, as compared with 357 points scored by tho loading live speakers out of the seven who opposed the resolution.
