FARMERS' UNION.

PALIIERSTON NORTH BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Palmerston' branch of the Farmers' Union was held on Saturday. Mr. J. BalSillie presided, and there' were- also present: Messrs. L. R. Bryant, H. .T. A. Barber, A. Farmer, E. Gardner, A. Harding, J. Wingate, and Captain Hewitt. Circulars 'iccvi' received from : the' be-' fence Department, explaining the military training scheme under' the Defence Act. A general discussion took place on the question of which was the most' suitable, time for farmers' sons to be drilled— in the daytime or at night; but no action was taken, as tile circulars stated- that tho convenience of those engaged in farming woukl be considered. • Circulars were received from the head office with regard to .the Sedgwick immigration scheme, asking those willing to engage boys to sign forms enclosed for tho purpose. It was resolved that farmers be informed that application forms ■ and information re engaging boys can be obtained at til? secretary's office. Mr. Ualsillie reported, with reference lo the .application of the director of tho Technical School for assistance to the ."•hearing classes, that the Provincial Defence Committee had allocated .£l7O for tho pir/pese 'if assisting technical instruction in wool shearing at Palmerston, Wangamii, and Ma-terton. so that would be voted to Ihe Palmerston Technical School. It was recommended that blade-shearing bo taught, as well as machine-shearing. The delegates attending the Provincial Conference held at "Woodville gave a report of the business transacted. As tho next conference y.'as to I;e held in Palmerston, the branch. would have to go into ways and means for entertaining the visiting delegates.
