PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Gorrespjndcnt.) Palmerston, Jlay 3. The lecture hall at the High School was crowded last night, v;hen an entertainment was given in aid of the piano fund. The first part comprised an interesting lecture by Jlr. E. Jl'Nab on Egypt, this being illustrated with lantern slides. The second hnlf consisted of concert items by tho High School girls, the following being the programme: — Piano solo, Connie Sl'Sherry; song and chorus, Nora Perrin and girls; club drill, girls; violin, solo. Olga Harris; vocal duet, Ivy and Mona Ji'Kenzie; pip.no solo, Jlina Gilehrist; song, Nola Pratt; sang and chorus, Ivy M'Kcnzie. and girls; "Gaudeamus," sirls and audience. At the conclusion of the entertainment, the rector (Mr. J. E. Vcrnon) thanked thoso who had contributed. Tho first meeting of ths nevvly-cikctcd borough council was held at noon to-day, when Jlr. J. A. Nash was installed as Mayor for his fourth term, and councillors made the usual declaration. Commit toes were set up, and routine business transacted. Over £50 has already been collected towards the Home liule fund in connection with the projected visit of the Irish delegates. Tho Executive met last evening, and made further arrangements in connection with their visit. The Municipal Hall was densely crowded last evening, when a meeting was held to celebrate, the Bible Tercentenary. The mayor presided, and addresses v;cre given by Revs. A. Doull, D. Hird, T. T. Thomas, Jti. G. lioscher, and others. For the erection of the, gymnasium for St. Andrew's Church Young Men's Club, tho tender of Slessrs. Peltelt and Dudley has been accepted, tho price being t £357. A cadet corps is to be formed in connection wiih ;he club, which will make ths fourth cadet corps announced within the last wwk. Evidently the martial spirit is not dying out—in this community, at any rat. , . Tho official figures relating to tho population of Kairanga County arc 3877, this being an increase of 150 since last census. These figures are almost as disappointing as was tho case for the borough. At the Hokowliitn links yesterday afternoon, the Manawntn Ladies' Golf Club held its first monthly inedal competition. The senior A grade contest was wj/i *f Miss Jlooie. Jlrs. L. Seifert being second, and Mrs. F. Jl'l'ae third. The senior 13 grade game v;ns won by Jlrs. .Strang, Jfrs. Adams being second. The junior match was won by Mrs. Tripe. Just before neon to-day, a workman, named W. Breen, met with" a painful accident. He was working under a two-story building, in King Street, which is being removed, when tho edifice slipped off the blocks, and he was crushed iniiw tub floor. With the aid of jacks, and cutting the flooring away, he was extricated, and at once removed to the hospital. Jlr. 1 , . lially, Conciliation Commissioner, sat in Palmerston to-day in connection with the engine-drivers' dispute. Messrs. L. Seifert, W, Cook, 11. R. Croll, and Vt., Ji'Kenzie (secretary of the Jlanawatu Employers' Association) appeared for the employers, and tho same assessors who appeared for tho union iii the other centres also sat here. After discussion, itwas decided to accept the Otago award, preference only to apply within one milo of tho Palmerston and Foxton post offices.
