A memorandum just issued by (lie General Staff at Headquarters states that up to Saturday last 15,835 persons between (he ag-s of 14 and 21 had registered under (he new defence feheir.o. In Hie last few days forms have come in more numerously than heretofore, lint better nrjgress will lie rci[nireil it' a complete registration is to be effected before June :!. The registrations effected in Hie difFrrcitt military districts up to the end of the week were as follow: — Senior Territorials. CadeK .Auckland 1,110 1.77-4 'Wellington 2,587 .'i,S7S Canterbury 1,227 2,330 Otago 1,200 2,020 Totals 5,633 10,002 These figures take no account of Territorials and Senior Cadets who are at present serving under the old order of things. On a rough calculation made at headquarters in 'Wellington, the Territorials and Senior C'adrts at present serving will account for another 17,500 (12,000 Territorials and 5500 Senior Cadets). Tho registration of these units is done automatically through the companies. It will accordingly be soon that up to the present approximately 33,335 persons liable to serve under the new scheme have been accounted for. .As tho defence authorities estimate that 71,000 are actually liable for service, over 37.000 forms have still to come in before June 2. . After that date those who should have registered and have not done so will be liable to prosecution. Each week the '56 area sergeants who at present controlling the work of registration report to the officers coiv.manding their respective districts. »nd tho latter in turn reports to headquarters. During the next two weeks a compilation embracing the whole country will bs made, and it will then b? possible to estimate roughly the lasgards who will have to register in the final days. As soon as tho returns are completed the work of examination will be proceeded with. Colonel J. E. Purely, Director of Jfedical Services, will have the assistance of four district principal medical officers in this very important work.
