9 '— (From Our Own Correspondent.) Palmerston North, May 2. Large numbers of sportsmen' went out yesterday for the opening of the shooting season. Some excellent bags of ducks wero obtained, but the birds were in anything but good condition, the very dry season probably accounting for this. Other kinds.of game—hares and pheasants especially—were on the scarce side, and long distances had to bo travelled to get anything like a decent bag.

At a meeting of the committee of the Manawatu Horticultural Society last night, the following stewards were, appointed for to-morrow's chrysanthemum show:—Cut flowers, Mr. V. Mason; pot plants Mr. C. E. Spooner; vegetables, Mr. ,T. ,T. Whitehead; fruit, Mr. A. C. Bradfield; decorative classes, Mesdames H. C. Mellsop and C. H. Porritt; home industries, Miss Gleiidinning. Mr. Outram will judge the fruit and vegetables. .

The local Orchestral Society has under rehearsal a fine programme- for its next concert, to be held in tho .first, week pf ■Tune. Miss Thelma Peterson, of Carterion, will be the vocalist at this concert.. ■The committee of tho Palmerston Amateur Boxing Club met last night, Mr. Allen in the chair. It was decided to open the season on Monday evening next, and to at once procure gymnasium paraphernalia. Mr. J. B. Beale, of AVoodville, is to read a paper on ".flow to Work a Dairy i'arm" at the National Dairy Show.

The monthly meeting of the Campbell Street School Committee was held last night, the Hcv. T. T. Thomas" presiding. The headmaster's report showed that, owing to an outbreak of measles during the month, the average attendance had fallen materially, and was only 592. The superintendent of the Fire Brigade had visited the school, and would report to the Fire Board on the exits. . It was resolved to approve the appointment of Mr. J. D. Aitken, o£ Waiata, to succeed Miss Kingett, who had been.transferred to I'eilding. The balance-sheet for 1910-11, duly audited, was received, and it was decided to transfer the committee's bank account lo the post office savings bank, the chairman and Mr. Swallow bring appointed to operate it. The secretary was instructed to make an application to the Education Board for desks and ventilators. Messrs. G. Allman and A. Pickering were appointed visiting members for the ensuing month. The llanawatu Coursing Club will hold its fiYst meeting for the current season on May 2-1. A number of Tarauaki owners of greyhounds' have intimated their intention of' competing.

The Management Committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union held its weekly mooting 1-ut night, the president (Mr. A. N. Gibbons) being in the chair. The liefereos' Association was granted a donation of M 55., and Mr. H. Dickel was appointed to fill the vacancy on the committee caused bv the resignation of Mr. F. Pirani. The fixtures for the first round of the cup contests were drawn up. U a mec-tinpr of St. John Ambulance Commilloe last night, tho nurse reported that she had paid 92 visits to patients (luring the month of April, and that there were two fresh eases. One death had occurred, while two patients had been removed to the hospital. Iwo new members were elected.
