PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
p (From Our Special Correspondent.! : Palmerston North, April 18. At a meeting of the committee of tho Manawatu Hunt Club on Saturday evening, the president, Mr. S. H. Lancaster, in tho chair, Mr. .1. Sweeney, of Pahiatiin, was appointed huntsman. It was decided to open the season with a run at Fitzherbert East, on Wednesday, April 20. It was also arranged to hold runs at Levin, April 29; Manakau, May 1; Kiuibolton, May 3; Otaki, May 10. The Terrace End Bowling and Tennis Club held a most enjoyable social in the hall on tho second lloor of tho pavilion, last night, when there were over forty couples ' present. Messrs. Jones and M'Urnth were M.C.'s, and, besides dancing, a number of vocal items wero rendered. On Sunday night, the residence of Mr. F. Robert;;, at _ Komako, was destroyed by fire. Nothing whatever was saved from the burning building, the inmates only escaping with what they were wearing. There was a crowded attendance at tho Scotch concert given under the auspices of tho Manawatu Caledonian Society last night. The principal contributors to the programme were: Madam Groomc, and Messrs. Farquhar Young and Harry Hall, all their numbers being cncorcil. At the interval, tho prizes won at the sports gathering during the day were presented to tho winners by Mr. D. Bnick, M.P. The entertniument was most successful in every way. The- Pnlmerston Bowling Club's Easter tournament was concluded yesterday afternoon. The whole of tho day was dovoted to the pairs matches, in which the. l'etone players, Messrs. Jones., and Wylie, again asserted their superiority by going right through without a loss, and winning tho contest. At tho Torraco End green, the rink skipped by Mr. C. S. Spooncr won tho rink contest, , the rink skipped by Mr. B. Hollitt coming second. The pairs handle cap was won by Mr. N. Sinclair and partner. Players were entertained at luncheon and.afternoon tea by tho president, Mr. R. Gardner. On. the Terrace End Bowling Club's tennis courts yesterday, the men's handicap singles was won by Purcell (scratch). The men's handicap doubles wore won by Onplcv and Anderson, the ladies' singles bv Miss 1. Kcrslalte, and tho doubels by Miss E. Kerslnke and D. Gould. At the Palmerston Tennis Club's courts* the annual Maori tournament, was commenced on Saturday, and concluded yesterday. Wanganni beat Hawkc's Bay in both the A and B grades. Tho contest was for the MarunSaru Cup. There was a great gathering of delegates from "No-License' organisations at l'almorstou yesterday, Wellington, Masterton, and other districts being represented. The convention opened in tho morning at the Prcsbvtcrinn Church, Mr. K. H. Crabbe being elected secretary. Addresses were (liven by Miss Powell on "Polling Dny Work," and Mr. Bridges, of iMnsterton, on "How we won at Masterton." It. was resolved to reiterate the demand for the bare majority. Reports were received from a number of districts. In tho evening there was a iirge attendance at tho Municipal Hall nnd tho Mayor, Air. .1. A. Xash, presided. Addresses were given by Mr. James M'Gragor, of Mastcrtun, on "No-License in M.is(erton," the Rev. Mr. Fee, of Wellington, on "National Prohibition," nnd Mrs. Cowio (Mrs. Harrison Lee), the latter speaker's address being entitled "Catch My Pal." During the evening a nuinlo of vocal items wore given.
