RUUBY FOOTBALL. NEW MAXAGEMF.XT COMMITTEE. FIRST MEETING. The newly-appointed Management Committee o: : the Wellington Rugby Union met last evening, Jlr. E. (I. Hales presiding until late in the evening, when Mr. S. S. Brown was elected chairman lor the. ensuing year. It was agreed th.it- a letter of thanks should be forwarded to Mr. .1. O'Sullivan, a- late member, for his past services to the union. Misleading Criticism. Towards the end of the meeting Mr. W. Perry drew tho attention of the committee to an article which appeared recently in a contemporary, criticising the union. It contained statements, he said, that were absolutely misleading and should be contradicted. . The Xcw Zealand Union notified that the annual meeting of delegates would be held on May 11 next. All notices of motion must be handed m not later than April 13 next. Upsetting a Rule. Some discussion took place over a communication from the New Zealand Union, stating that it had adopted a recommendation of the English Rugby Union in regard to the penalty for breach of the rule that on a line-out the ball must be thrown out not less than five yards. The penalty adopted was a scrum ten yards out. Members united in stating that the imposition of this penalty would defeat the object cf the new rule—to open up the play. A resolution to be brought before the New Zealand Union annual meeting is to be prepared next week. An Old Dispute. A letter was received from the Wellington Referees' Association in refer-ence-lo a statement about a referee made last year by Mr. D. D. AYeir and demanding an apology.—Received. Another Line. .The Referees' Association wrote asking the union to define a line five yards out from the side-lines on all grounds under its jurisdiction. It was agreed that the Athletic Park. Petone, Hutt. and Karori grounds and all grounds on the city reserves should be marked five yards out from the touchline with a broken line. A New Club. . A new club just formed at AA'aiwetu notified that it intended to enter two teams, one in third, and one in fourth grade. The club had selected chocolate jerseys and black knickers for its colours. Mr. J. Young, it was added, would supply a ground en condition that third grade matches were played upon it. It was resolved to suggest that (he club should adopt dark chocolate jerseys, and to notify it. (hat the ground would be inspected with a view to discovering its fitness for play. Messrs. Sweeney, Perry, and Hardham were appointed a snb-eom-mittco for the purpose named, with power to act. Easter Games. Four applications were received from clubs desirous ot obtaining the use of grounds at the Athletic Park on Easter Saturday, April -15.. It rcas agreed that the AYellington and Fonelce Clubs be granted grounds for games to start at 3 p.m., the Old Boys and Sehvyn games to como on as curtainraisers; further, that Old Beys be granted a ground on Monday. Tho union decided to"retain in its own hands the disbursement of proceeds, and not to recognise any sale of tickets bv the clubs. Seven-a-Side Tournament. Eighteen senior and eleven fifth grade teams offered -themselves for the seven-a-side tournaments to be held en Saturday next. In a ballot Sehvyn and one Petone senior team wore eliminated. Southern were balloted out of the fifth grade competition, and Poneke and Petone, who had each entered two teams in this grade, were each' reduced to one. Drawings for the opening matches resulted as fallow:—Senior: Athletic A v. AYellington; Poneke B v. Melrose; St. James A v. Poneke A; Sehvyn v. Victoria College; St. James B v. Petone; Southern A v. Old Bovs; Southern B v. Oriental; Athletic B v. Wellington College. Fifth grade; Selwyn v. Athletic; St. James v. Petone; Wellington College v. St. Patrick College;, Melrose v. Poneke. Championship Committees. The whole committee was appointed to control senior championship games. The following sub-committees wcro appointed to control other grades:—Junior: Messrs. Hardham and Little; third, Messrs. AA'iison and Hales; fourth, Messrs. Sweeney and Brown; fifth, Messrs. Perry and Burns; AA'cdnesday games, Air. Hornig. Other appointments: Drawing Committee (senior), Messrs. Hales, Burns, Sweeney, and Hardham. Drawing in the lower grades was left to the respective subcommittees, subject to ratification by the parent body. Transfer Committee. Messrs. Hales, Brown, and the secretary (Mr. AY. G. Talbot). Representatives on Appointment Board, Messrs. Perry and Sweeney. Postponement Committee, Messrs. Wilson, Brown, and Hales. Opening Day. The season will open en April 22, so far as senior, junior, and fifth grade games are concerned. Third and fourth grade games will start a week later. The clubs are to be informed that entrirs must be sent in at once, as the date of entry is past.
