Custom? duties collected at the port of Wellington yesterday ' amounted to £2576 Is. lid. Reports, received by the United States Postal Department regarding the first month's operation ot the postal savings Dank system started on January 1 are regarded by the officials as demonstrating that the now system has already passed the experimental stage. The total deposits in the 48 existing postal banks for January approximate £12X00, or an average of about £250 each. In the event of this average being maintained throughout the year, the aggregate deposits in those institutions for the year would amount to £150,0110. The officials feel confident that with the extension of the system to the larger cities there will be a, corresponding increase in the volume of deposits. Postmaster-General Hitchcock says that if the necessary appropriations were available ho would establish postal savings banks at once in 500 additional cities. THE METAL MARKETS.
