AN INTERESTING MAORI GATHERING.
MONUMENT UNVEILED. (By Tclegraph-Snecial Correspondent.) Auckland, March 29. A gathering of unusual interest took place on Sunday and Monday last at Port Waikato, whore representatives from all the Maori tribes in the Waikato assembled to do honour to the memory of the old warrior Mita Huia Kukutai. On tho arrival of the European guests by launch, the usual Maori welcomes were given. • The unveiling of the monument to tho memory-of Mita Huia Kukutai, an old Maori warrior of tho Nsratitipa tribe, whoso allegiance to Queen Victoria counted for much during the Waikato ■war, was performed by Bishop Williams. The ceremony was a very impressive one. In the afternoon, Bishop Williams confirmed a large number of Maoris of both sexes. In continuation of the celebration, six couples presented themselves on Monday to Bishop Williams, to be joined in holy matrimony.. The dress and stylo of the brides were-much the envy of their less fortunate sisters. Maize was thrown as a substitute for .the European custom of throwing rice. ' '
