A SHIPMASTER'S THEORY.
HOW THE WRECK OCCURRED. INSURANCES ON TEE VESSEL. (Roe. March 29, 1.5 a.m.) Melbourne, March 28. The general manager of tho Adelaido Steamship Company states that tho Yongala is one of the latest vessels of the company's floet, and is valued at .£90,000. Tho insurances on tho vessel aro in tho vicinity of ,£60,000. Tho Yongala had about 1800 tons of cargo aboard, which is believed to 1m insured. The company's captains, on being interviewed, aro of opinion that tho vessel struck on a reef in Flinders Channel. One shipmaster surmises that Iho Yongala had intended to nialco tho passago between Ilolborn Island and the outlying Is arcs Rocks, and that when the storm broke she edged away to make the outside pnfjngc. The captain, however, i did aot; wise out sufficiently, or left tba
manoeuvre too late, and was driven on to the rocks. There would be no hope of saving life under' such conditions. The cyclonic storms on the northern coast were of such violence as to smash the boats to pieces before they reached the writer. The Yongala would sink quickly in deep water.
