WANTED-OPERATIVES.
A CONFERENCE IN PROSPECT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, March 25. The ehortnge-of' operatives iu various factories was discussed at a conference convened by the Auckland • Chamber of 'Commerce between the Manufacturers' Committee of the chamber and .representatives of the Auckland Provincial Association. Mr. B. Buttle, president of the Industrial Association, suggested that the Government should ascertain through the various labour bureaus and factory inspectors the actual position. If tliOi Government was satisfied there was a' real need, a email eeleclion committee of factory managers should proceed to England to arrange for the labour required. The Hon. J. T. Paul, M.L.C., said he felt sure the suggestion would not meet with tho approval of trades organisations. He thought a better plan would be to arrange a conference between the Federation of Employers and the employees. If these could agree as to the alleged shortage then they could confidently approach the Government for relief.
The following resolution was unanimously carried:—"That a start bo made in the direction indicated by Mr. Paul by calliuc a conference of the Auckland Clothing Manufacturers' Union with the. Tailoresses' Union! also between the. Boot Manufacturers' Union of Employers and the Auckland Bootmakers' Union, (operative), and when they agreed upon a position, then make representations to the Government."
