PALMERSTON NEWS.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) . Palmerston, March 16. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held to-day, Mr. J. G. Wilson (chairman) presiding. The notice of motion, by Mr. Pe-arce, that patients' fees be done away with, and the hospital made en- • tirely free was referral to the local bodies concerned for consideration. Dr. Frengley, district health ollicer, ■ waited ' on the hoard, and wibmilled information as to the liability of the board in conmotion with infectious diseases so far as local bodies were concerned. ■ He stated that it was the duty of the board to ' arrange lor the fumigation of houses in ' winch cases of fever had occurred, and it was the duty of the Government inspector to attend to the matter, on such matters being notified to him. The Do- ' partment proposed that an inspector should be appointed at a salarv of .C 250 per annum, half the salary to'bo found by the local bodies interested, and half by tho Government. The duties of the inspector would be tn notify (lie secretary of the board of a case of infectious disease, and he would depute someone to make the necessary arrangements'. 'Ths man appointed would have to take up the position of inspector under the Sale of Foods and Drugs Act out of consideration of the grant that tho Government would make; he could also help to investigate cases of charitable aid that came under his notice. This man would be sanitary inspector for the outlying and sparsely-populated parts of the. district, but would have very little work to do in this connection in Palmerston where a special man was employed. After discussion, it was decided to appoint an inspector on the lines suggested by the Department. At the last meeting of the Terrace End School Committee a complaint was re-, coivert regarding the coiiduct of a pupil whilst on the way to school, and thij brought to light a matter of which very few parents are aware, and that is that children on their way to and from school are really under . the supervision of the head teacher, and are liable to bo ' punished by him for any misconduct which may happen on the way. In consequence of this power, the committee decided not to interfere in tho case brought under their notice.
