. 6 THE LIGHTING PBOBLEM.-, A meeting of the Onslow Borough Council was. heid last evening, Mr. J. Lynneberg,- Deputy-Mayor, presiding, 'i'hers were alto present jiessrs. M'. It. i'limmer, Aplm, J). A. bannister, A. Ferguson, U. D. Darvall, \V. It. Bowden, and B. S. • ritaftord. A communication was received from the managing director of the Gas Company bearing on the question of the supply of gas lor the borough. The council . had written the company stating that it \-- had reconsidered the matter of the gas supply, and would now cuter into un agreement with the company for tho lighting of the district. The managing • director of the company stated that ha w.ould draft instructions to the company's solicitors to make a draft agreement, but. before submitting tho same ho would ask the council to go through it with him in an informal manner. Tho • letter concluded as under:—"lt is, of course, understood that tho completion or tho arrangement depends upon tho'making of an agreement with the Johnsonvillc Town Beard, and upon the company being successful in obtaiuing a right of access across the Wadcstown gully." ;' A letter was also received I'ro'm tho ■Wellington City Council as follows:—"Referring to the negotiations beinj carried on by your borough with rofcrenco to tho supply of gas, I am directed to inform .von that wo will bo prepared to treat with your borough regarding its public .■ street-lighting by electricity, and willalso give demonstrations of heating and cytokine by electricity should you so desire." Both letters were referred to a subcommittee consisting of Councillors Lynne- ' berg, Plimmer, Ferguson, and Stafford. It was decided that proceedings should be taken to collect outstanding rates, which amount to about .£2Oll lo dale. The engineer W:\s instructed to report on the flooding of tho Crofton West' cul- ' vert. Accounts on the. dislriet fund account amounting to .£4SP 17s. 2d. and .-£Bl3 13s. on the ralchmcnt area loan account wero passed for payment.
