The Chatham Islands correspondent to -the "Press," writine two or three days n«o favs: "Our prolonged drought has broken'and n week's fairS- he-ivy rain has soaked the ground sufficiently to almost" ensuro a good autumn growth, It was much needed as we have only had a few sltowers since early in October and the countrv was completely dried up, the ground in many places being opened in cracks two feet deep, and wide enough to put one's arm in. A week before tho rain came a larse fire was raging on Mr, J. Marker's Kningaroa Station. Several miles of fencing were burnt and it is estimated that 1000 now posts will bo required to repair the damage. The Chatham Island Fishing Company have bi'on doing very well lately and nre going to enlarge their works immediately. Fishing has had to bo slopped several times because the freezer could not keen up with the fishermen. The Norah Nivcn took 2" tons away week. The record catch was 12 tons of fish in two days by ten men in three boats.
