There is.-no trace of ,the remains of the island. " I -' In 1879-80 tho Lake of Ilopango was the scene of a remarkable series of volcanic disturbances. . It is 51 miles by 4i miles, and forms a rough parallelogram. On all sides are steep mountains, except where two villages, Asino and Apulo, occupy little patches of level ground; Towards the end of December,-1879, fhe lake rose several feet above its usual level, and a volcanic centre 500 feet in diameter rose to a height of 150 feet above the water, surrounded by a number of small islands. A number of villages wore ruined by tho accompanying earthquakes.
