. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, December 9. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Swimming Association to-night applications for the next championship meeting were received from Wanganui and Wellington. On a ballot Wellington's application was granted. LAWN TENNIS. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. The New Zealand lawn tennis championship tournament is to be held in the pretty country town of Blenheim this year, commencing on Boxing Day and continuing till December 28. Great preparations have been made by the Management Committee of 'the local association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, and the very good conditions in the matter of grounds and appointments may bo expected. The Marlborough Lawn Tennis Club's courts have been closed for a fortnight, have been topdressed, and will remain closed till the championship begins. The five courts have received (he attention of the Grounds Committee, while the association is erecting a pavilion capable of seating 200 spectators. The association has decided to retain control of the catering, and a Ladies' Committee has been sot up to arrange details in connection therewith. A large number of players have intimated their intention of being present and competing, amongst them being Misses Nunneley, Travers, and probably Miss Powdrell (tho present lady champion), also Messrs. Peacock, Fisher, Laishley, Parker, and Quill. Tho visiting Now South Wales team is also to cross the Strait for tho event. A couple of hundred visitors. , are oxpected. At. the. conclusion of the New Zealand championship meeting the annual Marlborough championship nnd handicap tourney will be held, lasting till January 2. Besides a largo number of local competitors, many of the visiting playera will enter for this. Nominations

for both .the New Zealand and tho local tourneys close on December 19. Tho U.S.S. Company will run steamers daily each way between Wellington and Picton from December 20 onwards uliti] further notice, so that visitors will havo easy communication with Blenheim. CYCLING AND ATHLETIC CARNIVAL. ; Tho Port Nicholson Cycling Club purpose holding a combined sports gathering on the Basin Reserve on New Year's Day, and given a fine day thero should bo - a good attendance. Amongst the leading events are tho Wellington wheel race handicap, worth £15, open to professional riders, also a .wheel race (two miles) for amateur riders, for which a handsome gold medal will be given. There aro also several running events for amateurs, and it is expected that such events will draw good fields. Arrangomo s are being made to induce Smith,_ of Ohristchurch, to compote. This rider, it will be remembered, put up the fastest time in the.last Timaru to Christchurch road race. It may be mentioned also that he is in the best form, and may justly be classed as about the best rider in the Dominion. Rulers will also, be present from all .over the Dominion. Entries close on; Wednesday, December 21. CUTTER RACE. : This afternoon . the annual- cutter race for the White Horse Whisky Cup between crews from the Petone and Wellington Ex-Navals' Associations will be rowed. The course will bo from Pipitea Point to tho Naval Boat Station on Jeryois Quay. The following is the Wellington crew:—A. Griffiths (cox), Chirnside, P. Smith, M'Williani, Amos, G. Smith, Bruce, Palmer, Hooke, Gott, Couper, and Casey. The members and crews of the association will l>3 tho guests of Mr. E. T. Taylor at'a smoko concert in tho evening. Swimming races will also be held. ... '■ RIFLE SHOOTING. PONGAKOA EIFLE CLUB. Last Wednesday the members'of the Pongaroa Eiflo Club fired-for- a leg-in for tho club 1 cup. Mr. E.
