In response .to a deputation of ladies who waited upon him to-day, Mn-E. A. Ormond, of Stratford, has consented to continuo to act as secretary of tho National Sweet Pea Society.
A largo party of Palmerston instrumentalists went to Feilding last evening to_ assist in the production, of ■the oratorio "Elijah." ,In connection with this subject it may bo mentioned that tho Palmorston. Choral Society will render "The Messiah" on Decembor ' 21, under the conductorship of Mr. Maurice Cohen.
Mrs. J. A. Nash (Mayoress) will judge the floral decorations at the Foxton floral fete. :
Tho Palmerston Rifles, under Captain Mounsel and Lieut. Louisson, went into camp for. a week at the Manawatu A. and P. Show Grounds last night. Soon after, pitching the tents rain began to fall-, but; the men . did not suffer any inconvenience from this cause, Tho members,of the corps will have allthoir meals in. camp, but .will work at their usual occupations during the day, doing their drill in tho early morning and in the evenings. The secretary of the Apiti 'Householders' Association wrote to the Palmerston Hospital Board yesterday asking for a subsidy to enable thorn, to retain the. services of a medical' man in that township. The board went into committee to consider tho .matter, and afterwards resolved that it could not entertain tho application. . A summoned meeting of tho local Lodge of Oddfellows, M.TJ., was held last night; when there was a large attendance ,aud Bro. F. W. Pettell,N.G.,' occupied the chair. Two new niembere were initiated, and a considerable mount of routine business was. transacted. The election of officers for tho ensuhig term will.take place at next meeting. '■■ There was a full attendance at tho monthly meeting of the Orange • Lodge, held last evening, closo on sixty members being present. - Bfo. H. Jackson, W.M., presided.. Notification was received from the Grand Lodge that the next annual Sessions would be held at Christchurch at Easter. It was unanimously decided to, send an invitation to the Grand Lodge to hold the 1912 session at Palmerston North. After tho initiation of two candidates the. annual election of officers took place, kocii, competition resulting for tho offices. The Rev. F. M'Donald was elected Worshipful Master for tho ensuin" year. The installation of officers will take place at. tho January meeting, when the lodge decided to hold a banquet for the occasion. One brother was affiliated on clearance, two members applied for affiliation from lodges in Wellington and Canterbury, and one candidate, was proposed for membership. It was' decided to hold a special meeting next Thursday for tho purposo of initiating two candidates. Altogether a very successful mooting was held, and increased interest is being shown in the Order generally throughout the Dominion. Tho report from tho Grand Secretary showed that' several now lodges had been opened within tho last month.
