MEAT FOR AUSTRIA.
PROSPECTS FOR NEW'ZEALAND ■ EXPORTS. The decision of. the Austrian Government to allow the importation of Argentine meat into that country gives rise to the question as to what effect this increased competition may havo on the meat oxportahon of ■ New ■ Zealand and Austra-' ha. Sir "William Hall-Jones, High Commissioner for New Zealand, who recently paid a visit to the Austrian capital in connection with this matter, has stated that the amount of meat which the Austrian authorities were allowing to ho imported from the Argentine was 700 tons— not 10,000 tons, as has heen stated. c-" A w-ir lis is °SIFn for °?°> enr >" added Sir William. , "When the" year is up fresh application will have to bo made Although. after considerable agitation the restrictions against the importation of foreign meat have been removed in -Vustria to this small, extent, it is still a question whether the Government are going to allow more to pass through If they are-well, whero the Argentino'trade can go in other competitors can go in also." In the event of any extensive trade with Austria quality in. tho meat imported would bo considered, and in that respect said the High Commissioner, New Zealand meat would havo an advantage.
