Ho was taken to tho Greytown Hospital for treatment. Owing to tho prevailing dry weather tho..outlet of tho Wairarapa Lake has now closed up, but steps are to bo taken at the first opportunity to reopen it. ': A sitting of the Magistrate's Court before Mr. L. G. Eeid, S.M., was held here on Monday, but only cases of local interest were heard. greytown; . The monthly meeting' of tho Greytown liorougk Council was hold on Monday evening, there being ■ present Mr. .D I. Loasby (Mayor), Councillors Bruuton, Hayes, Haigh, Coe, Trotman, Raison, and Webster. A letter was received from the engineer of the new gas works asking for his fee and undertaking to forward agreement for signature. Dr. M'Carthy wrote reporting a case of diphtheria and one of scarlet fever in the borough. Except for the two cases of infectious diseases | the health officer's report was satisfactory: Twenty-eight head of cattle wero reported as having been impounded by the ranger." Several alterations were ordered to be. carried out for the accommodation of performers at the Town Hall. The Gas Committee., recommended the purohase of Section 14, Cotterville,. for the gas works site, and that applications' for the position of manager, and tenders, for tho erection of ■ buildings, be called. Also that a special meeting be called for December 21 to consider same. The committee's report was adopted. On- the motion of the Mayor the town clerk was granted 'a bonus of -.£lO 10s. ■• The weather here has been very hot lately and several crops are now. "being cut. Haymakers are hard at work all through tho district. CARTERTON. Although not quite unexpected, it came as a shock to the residents of tho district on Monday when the sad news •gained currency announcing the . death of Mr. H. S. Mason, well known among the farming community of the Gladstone district. _ The late Mr. Mason, who had been ailing for some time, came to the Wairarapa when a lad, and found employment on Carter's Eun, and son;e years later was engaged in carrying - the mails between Gladstone and Carterton. After this he took up farming, which pursuit he followed till illness prostrated him. He was a genial, kindly man, and respected all through the community. Ho was also for a number of j-eafs chairman of the Gladstone School Committee, and at-the time of his demise held a seat on tho Wairarapa South County Council. He leaves a widow and family of five sons and four daughters.
Mr. J. H. Duffy, of Carterton, has purchased Mr. W.. Fisher's ten-acre section and buildings thereon at the southern end of the borough boundary, the price being £650.
