The crops in the district are looking very well, considering tho dryness of/this' season. Most'of them are now in ear,, and will > shortly be ready fpr 'J-'he straw is very short, but the heads (ire filling well. _ The oat crops are -particularly -promising. Haymaking has already commenced on one or. two fatms. The growth of grass has been- wonderful and there should be ,an abundance of fodder fpr next winter. The announcement that tho Wellington provincial, lawn tennis championship is to be competed for hero about Anniversary Pay is giving much. satisfaction to local tennis/enthusiasts. Seven courts will be available" for tho tournament.
An empty liotise, belonging to Mr. 0. C. Pr'agnall, caught fire on Thursday afternoon, but the flames were extinguished before much damage had been done. Inquiries made by the police indicate that a.little boy was in the house during the afternoon. Whether he was connected with the fire, or not is not.known. The police are making jFurth'er inquiries; A/successful concert was given by the Masterton Orchestral Society in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. Every item on the programme was encored.
