(Bnin Our Own CorresponflenU One of the most. honourable and progressive societies connected with any profession is the British Medical Association, which" has its raniifloatioiis throughout the Empire.. The nicdical practitioners pf Westland are to be coinmendcd for having established a sub-branch of the society.;. The' inaugural meeting was held this' week at the clubroom of the Albion- Hotel, Greyniouth, the chairman being Dr. James M'Brearty. The followr ing officers for the year were elected ujit animously: —• President, Dr. James M'Brearty; vice-president. Dr. H. drew; lion, secretary and treasurer, Dr. W. 'M'Kav'j executive council, Drs. Meade, Hag'en, Telfyrd, Morrice, and the president, vice-president, and secretarj-; delegate to the K'ew Zealand Couucil, Dr. J. W. Brcarty. A meeting of the members of tho Ureymouth -Native Reserves Comiuittec was held this week for the purpose of reviewing tho 'position and discussing the Bill which Sir Joseph Ward has undertaken ; to introduce into tho lloijso of Itepresentatives. There was a large attendance, and after the subject hud been fully debated, it w.-us decided to communicate with tho -member for the district and other members .who are in sympathy with tlie objects of. the lessees, and to leave no stone unturned in'the endeavour to procure a satisfactory solution of a question which is of such importance to the future prosperity of this part of the Dominion. At the invitation, of - the Mayer pf Brunner, the residents held a large meeting last Saturday evening for the purpose of urging upon the. Government tho necessity of reopeniiif: the Wallsend mine. The Mayor stated that the proposal was tho only one that could savo the town from decay. The Brnnner coalfield which is the oldest in the Dominion was opened (n 188-4,. and practical miners assert that there, is sufficient coal in the district to last for the. next 46 years. The Brunner mine alone has produced 2,000,000 tons of coal, whereas only 200.000 tops have been taken from the AVattend iniue, which was closed years ago.- The following resolution was carried unanimously:—'"That in view of the excellent eonl sea-m known to exist within reach of the Wallsend shafts, and because private enterpritx! has failed to develop it, the Government ho urged to'work the Wallsend mine as a State concern."
