s A farewell "social" is to bo tendered to Archdeacon Harper by the parishioners of All Saints' Church "on No-, vomber '10.'..' Archdeacon Harper "leaves for .Wellington somo time in November. The National Sweet Pea Society of Now Zealand, which holds. its, initial show in Palmerston on December ,7 and 8. is olfpring . some valuable trophies for that event, among them being a twenty-five guinea . .prizo,.. donated.. by residents' of: Maiiawatu,' 'while' tlie,. ladies of Palmerston aro contributing ,a fiveguinea ;prizo for table decbratibiis. It is expected that there will be very , keen competition in the latter division, over thirty ladies in this district, alono having intimated that, they propose to en-; ter exhibits, for it. Among other trophies already donated is bne from tho president.,ol ; the society, .valued at twenty-five guineas;,tho Yates trophy, valued -nil ten, guineas; and the championship trophy, to be provided .by Wellington, enthusiasts, • ,worth from twen'ty-fivo to forty guineas. Mr. .A. C. Bradfield, of Paimeraton, is putting a considerable amount ,of enthusiasm into the exhibition locally,.and tho show promises to be the largest collection of sweet peas, ever got together in the Dominion. •
Tho Technical School ; Cadets were equipped with,rifles for'their parade-on Friday evening; - when there-was a muster of fifty; under Captain Whalley. and Lieut. Kells. . , Manawatu Kilwinning Lodge, gave its annual children's, "social" in .tlie '3luhi-. cipal Hall on. Friday evening,: -when there was a great muster of little ones, who thoroughly enjoyed tho ' games, dancing, etc. A number of vocal items were rendered, and Mosdames Martin and W. M'Kenzio contributed tho music for/the dancing. . .'. For tho past week or two - the Pal-merston-High School Cadets have been carrying on a competition for a •'■' cup presented by .-Mr.'-Walter ltutherfiircT. Yesterclny the competition was completed, and; resuited in a win for Cadet L. Craw, of Linton. Tho ranges wore 200, 300, and 500 yards, and the winner's total was 85, including a handicap of 3. A confirmation service .wsis held ait All Saints' Church this afternoon by Bishop Wallis. There: were over ono hundred candidates for confirmation, including many adults. The church tvas crowded.
