SPORT WITH THE RIFLE. GARRISON SHIELD MATCHES. Saturday was o good day for the moil on the mounds at Trentham, and "tho first round of the Garrison Shield matches for senior, junior, and thirdclass teams from tho- various company units of the Wellington Garrison, ;was fired unior tho pleasantest auspices. In the senior grades, tho Guards, despite the serious gaps ill the ranks of tho company's shooting enthusiasts, many of who, time-expired, have gone over to tho rifle clubs, came first with an aggregate score of 919 points, beating the Post and Telegraph Rifles, who came second, by nine points. Some dislanco behind tho Post and' Telegraph came the Highlanders, with 897. If the team which the knowing ones say will ultimately win the shield—there are two rounds to bo fired yet—it will have to look to itself, for 897 is a had beginning. Tho Civil Service Rifles came following in tho Kilties' wake with SOO points, and, lastly, tho redoubtable City Rifles, with 852. Tho next round may see'some changes in the order of competing team6—that remains to bo seen. , Among the juniors, the Hutt Valley ■Rifles were points ahead of tho second team-whin the targets ivere turned down. Their aggregate was 878, while the Engineers managed to score 857 only. Victoria College O.T.C. (A team) came third in the junior round, while their B teamtopped the list of the third-class teams. As will be seen from the following details of tho scoring, some excellent snooting was recorded :-r - SENIOR SHIELD MATCH. Seven, shots at 200, 500, and 600 yards. GUARDS (A TEAM). Sergt.
