Prime .Minister of Canada, declared that the Government was forced to remember the existing diplomatic relations with the Orient and the general welfare of Canada, in addition to the peculiar labour requirements of British Columbia.

Replying to the Vancouver Board of Trade, which asked for a higher tariff, particularly on lumber, Sir W. Laurier said he felt confident that the Minister for Finance would frame a moderato tariff' which,' while it' might be in the nature of a compromise, ought nevertheless'.be fairly satisfactory to the whole community.
