IMMIGRATION.
NEW SOUTH WALES FIGURES HUGE GAIN OF DEPARTING . NEW ZEALANDERS. POPULATION FLOWING IN. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. August 19, 0.35 a,m.) Sydney, August 18. The Bureau of Immigration last ye.ar assisted -4308 immigrants' to New South, Wales, besides which 1231 other new arrivals were placed in positions.
This is tho largest immigration gain made by. the State for twenty-three years. During the four years since the introduction of the present system 14,900 immigrants have been assisted.
The' report of the Director of the Bureau states that after Great Britain the next largest contributor to the population of New South Wales was NewZealand, from which country a gain of 7285 was made last year. From Canada came 211. . Until two years ago the movement between these countries and New South Wales showed a loss to tho latter.
The report adds that the South African movement, by which New South Wales gained 3948 persons since 1906, was probably similar to that from New Zealand, and may bo now practically ■ completed, all tho old residents of the State having returned. ,
So far as assisted agriculturists and domestics are concerned, the Bureau's system is so complete that all present arrivals can be dispatched to employment within twenty-four hours after their landing in the State. Were depots established for unassisted .immigrants, ■ the State could accept tons of thousands more immigrants yearly without, any fear . of dislocating the labour market'. The- total gain by immigration last year, including those assisted by the Immigration Bureau, was 17,636.
