The protest against tho present extravagance and optimism in the United States continues. It is pointed out, as a , striking. instance of the. expenditure on luxuries; that during last year, works of art totalling in value the enormous sum of, 21,000,000. dollars (.£4,200,000), were imported into the United- States from abroad.. The previous record for any one year, was 0,000,000. dollars. . Bankers and financiers - are protesting particularly against the motor-car craze which" has set in of late. •The State of Kansas, with' ,'a. population' of about a million and a half, has sunk ,£0,000,000 ia motor cars.. Over 180,000 ' motor-cars have been licensed in the State of New fork. '■ Altogether it is estimated that a billion dollars are spent annually on the purchase of motor-cars in tho United States the cost of upkeep absorbing a further quarter of a million dollars.
