OLD AND DECREPIT.

-'■'•' THE OHARIU SCHOOL. ■■: J. deputation representative of residents in Ohariu Valley waited upon tho Educa- ■ tion. Board at its meeting yesterday, for the purposo of bringing before it the '. -urgent necessity of having a new school building in Ohariu. The spokesman for the deputation (Mr. Si Bryant) pointed out that the present school, building was built about forty years ago, and was now in a very precarious condition, and stays, had had to bo put into position to render it stable. From time to time disinterested residents had, at their own. expense,- put the floor in repair, and patched up the building. Had it uot been for -these repairs,' very probably the Health Department would have condemned it long ago. r The school was not suited to its/present requirements, all. the classes wore in. one room, thus making the school work, very difficult .for the two, teachers. ' Further, the ancient structure had harboured microbes for so long now that some of them must have reached maturity, for all sorts of ailments had afflicted the children, and appendicitis—(smiles)— tonsilitis, fever, and so on'wore frequent visitors.

The chairman .(Mr. Robert Lee). said , that the- question of building ,a new school at Ohariu. had been favourably, reported upon by the inspectors, and-had quite recently engaged the attention of the board. He assured the deputation that a move, in'that direction would be .'made-at the-first opportunity... 'i' • - The deputation, after urging upon the board that an early and definite announcement of the board's intentions be made, then withdrew.

. Subsequently, the board resolved that the matter would-'be definitely, proceeded with in three months' time.
