PERSONAL-NOTES FROM LONDON. London, May 26. Air. and Airs. J. H. Upton and Miss Nellie Upton, of Auckland, have arrived in England by the Mongolia.
Mr. J. V. E. Richards, of Wellington, who is studying medicine at Guy's Hospital, has passed the Primary Fellowship r.'xamimitioii of the Koyal College of Surgeons.
Judge Denniston (Chief Justice of New Zealand) and Mrs. Denniston are again in London. They have been, in Scotland, and the . visit there has benefited the judge's health a great deal.
Mr. S. R. Skinner, of Onelvunga, Auckland, is paying a round of visits in Kent', Southampton, Cornwall, Ireland, etc. He leaves for New Zealand on August 21, returning via Vancouver'. Mr. James Buchanan, who was connected tor very many years as manager in one of the New Zealand .branch establishments of Messrs. Sargood, Son, am* Ewen, intends' to settle in Scotland. He arrived a few weeks ago in England. Mr. Heiiry -Green, of Auckland, leaves for New Zealand on October 11 by the Bremen, from Genou. Before coming to London Air. Green spent-a short time on the Continent, and he intends to pay another visit to Italy on returning. • Airs. Kilgour, of Auckland, arrived by the Mongolia, having visited en'route Colombo, Marseilles, and Gibraltar. She intends., amongst other trips, to see the Passion Play at Ober-Ammergau, and may probably return to New Zealand via the Holy Land. Air. and Mrs. A. Smith, of Auckland, arrived in England by tho Konigen Louise recently. Mr. Smith is on six months sick leave. Later, Air. and Airs. Smith will visit Scotland and Ireland, returning to New-Zealand via Suez by one of the July steamers. vi- 1 ft' L P s!io D - Coombs, of Dunedin and Wellington, arrived by the Persic, and intends to spend about a couple of years in _ this" country and on the Continent, linishnig Ins studies in art and architecture, preparatory, to commencing practice as an architect iu New Zealand. Sir Lambert, who. is over from Dublin on a tow days visit, was much struck bv the creditable display made by the Dominion. Mrs. Ba'rkas.intends-leaving London for the Dominion in the autumn. She is at present in Dresden. - Mrs. Barkas is interested in making known to New Zealandera m London Jier suggestion to tho •High Commissioner that one day in the week should be set apart for'a meeting of her countrymen and women at -the Japanese Exhibition. The High Commissioner thought tho . suggestion r. very good one, and spoke, of tho New' Zealand Lourt being a suitable rendezvous. Amongst the recent callers from New Zealand at the New Zealand Pavilion at the Japan-British Exhibition have been the Hon. S. Thorne-Gcorge, 'of Auckland, Kev.aY...l.:Thompson, Mr. and Mrs?:?: 1 B. Nolan, Mr. L. "\r: Gardiner, Miss Kahn, Miss Maling, Mr. and Mrs. J. °Bnen,' Mr. J. Hastie, Mr. L. D. Cohen, of Palmerston Nortli, Mr., Mrs., and the Misses Golls, of Wellington, and Mr. and Mrs. S. Girdwood, of Pahiatua. The Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Tudor Jones, of Wellington, are in London until the end of tho month, and are,-the gnests of Mrs. Aspland, .widow of the late Dr. Aspland, Professor of Law at the University of London. Dr. Tudor Jones delivered an address recently at the annual meeting of tho British and Foreign Unitarian Association, and has had his hands full since he arrived, preaching and lecturing. , Next month. Dr. and Mrs. Jones visit Liverpool and Swansea, and in August with go to Berlin for the international meeting of the Liberal Religious Thinkers of the World, in which Dr. Jones will take part. Afterwards they go on to Jena University to visit friends. . Mr. F.' W. Connell'and Mr. M. A. M'Kellar; of Palmerston North, have come to England via German New Guinea, Manila, Japan, the Straits Settlements, and Suez. They spent ten days in Japan, calling at Yokohama, Kobe, and , Nagasaki. They intend to remain four months in Great Britain, afterwards joining an outward-bound steamer at Naples. ; The Hon. W. Pcmber Reeves, formerly High Commissioner of New Zealand, spoke at the London School of Economics on Friday week'on the working of the industrial wages boards and arbitration laws for regulating wages and conditions of employment.
