During the month of June ono marriago, eleven births, and three deaths were. registered in Mastorton. For the previous month tho figures woro six, twenty-four, and eight respectively. The carrying capacity of most of tho laud in the Wairarapa has enormously increased during recent years. One settler stated yesterday that a farm from which he took £400 for wool a few years back, last year yielded between £2000 and £3000. This is only one of many instances of tho kind which might be recorded.

Thej'Q were seven convictions for drunkenness at the Magistrate's Court in Mastorton during the month of June. It is perhaps unnecessary to state that most of the offenders fell into the hands of the police on returning from adjoining townships.

Mr. W. Rooks, an old resident of Mastorton, and for many years employed on the local section of the railways, died here this afternoon. • A Swede Competition. The judging of swedes in the competition instituted by tho Mastorton A. and P. Association took placo on Wednesday, the j«dges being Messrs. T. I'. Lett and A. J. Percy. The maximum points were as follow: —Weight of crop, 60 points, estimated at oho point for every toil; quality, 30 points; evenness, 10 points; cultivation, 10 points. Tho first .section of tho competition was for the field of swedes (fiat) of not less than three acres. This was won by Mr. W. Cameron, who was also awarded second prize. Mr. B. H. Maunsell was third. Tho second competition for tho best field of swedes (ridged) was' won by Messrs. 1 Dagg Bros., Mr. F. Price beiiig second, and Mr. P. Evans third. Two petitions in bankruptcy were filed in the Mastorton district in tho month of June, as against four for the same month last year. For the halfyear ending Juno 30 there were twelve bankruptcies—six during the first quarter and six in the second. Only three of these occurred in Masterton township. Sixteen petitions wore filed during the corresponding period last year.

Howard Booth, and afternoon tea was subse- ! quently dispensed at "Carrington House." Sir. T. Tilson, master of the hounds, was on Rapid. The drag was laid by Messrs. C. F. Vallance and C. J. Bennett.

Perry, with 64, in the "B."

, . Messrs. C. E. Daniell, James Elliott, and Orlando Pragnoll, who have been on an, extended visit to Australia, returned to their homes yesterday. • They speak very highly of the commercial prospects in Australia.

The One Topic of the Day. Tho forthcoming battle between John r son and Jeffries is tho absorbing topic of conversation 'in this district just now. Young-and old alike seem to be filled with interest in the encounter. ,On the street, in the. railway train, at places of amusement, go where one may, the question is unceasingly asked, "Who do you think will win?" Very ,few people seem to know that Parliament is in session, or to care a snap of the finger whether the cyclonic storm visits New Zealand.. Will the black man defeat the white? That is tho question. . .

Hockey Matches. In the hockey matches of yestorday, Post and Telegraph tied with Excelsior, each side registering a goal, and Carterton won its match with Martinborough by default. In the junior division St. Matthew's A and Excelsion A tied with one goal each; St. Matthew's B defeated Excelsior B by two goals to nil; Carterton A beat Carterton B by four goals to two; Ramblers defeated Huias by four goals to nil; and Kiwis beat Hinemoa by five, goals to nil.
