, ' 0 : — : ' MAGISTRATE'S COURT. During the quarter just ended 146 sittings wore held at the Magistrate's Court in Wellington. There were 701 civil cases, the amount,sued for being £20,082,25., of which £10,896 18s. lid. was recovered. In tho .corresponding quarter of the previous year the amount sued for was £35,695 ss. 3d., of which £15,258 13s. 6d. was recovered. Of the criminal business dealt with, it is stated in the return that 1445 persons were- taken into custody. Ninetythree were discharged for want of prosecution or eriilcnce, .43 wero dismissed on their merits, ,; and 27 committed for trial or sentence. Summary convictions totalled _ 1282, of which number 174 suffered imprisonment in lieu of debt or fine. Criminal' fees paid in stamps totalled £121 Is,, and jn fines £658 18s. The number of persons dealt with by the. Court in its criminal jurisdiction for tho corresponding quarter of 1909 was 1255.
