HAWKE'S BAY NEWS.

; THE FLOOD PROBLEM. » : (Dy Tolegraiih.—Special Correspondent.) Napior, July 1. ; A petition urging that Mr. S. Carnell, who has represented the Napier electorate in Parliament,.'should* be appointed to the Legislative Council, is being circulated.

; A.-meeting of farmers was held at Wairoa 1 to discuss the possibility of establishing a bacon company. The meeting was well attended. The Value, of such an industry was recognised and a large amount of support will be given.

Mr. H. Brenchley was the successful tenderer for the construction of the new wharf at Turiroa, Wairoa. The contractor will endeavour to procure timber from Wellington, instead of Australia, and thus avoid delay.

Tile , iiood problem was discussed at a long meeting to-day of the committee set up to form a central river board, instead of the three boards existing at present. Tiie (Jlive people oppose t'he idea, flunking it would mean a diversion of the Tutaekuri ltivor to their district, but it was pointed out that this would depend on tlie report of an engineer. Mr. Hugh Campbell thought that a commission should bo appointed to go round and get the views of prominent settlers, and get a scheme prepared'. Mr. Watcrhouse said: "The -Minister for public works told us plainly that nothing could bo done until the central board was set up. He will not. send an engineer otherwise." Mr. It. D. D. M'Lean thought Mr. Campbell's idea was a good one. It was true they could not get an engineer until the board was sot up, but tho proposal was a stepping-stone. Mr. G. P. Donnelly hoped tho Clivo people would understand that tliey do not want to give, them tho Tutaekuri. The Napier and Mceanee people could not possibly afford to lose it. Such a loss would be disastrous to tho Harbour Board and district. Mr. M'Lean said they might have difficulty in getting a special Bill through. Collecting. information would cause delay, but it would be useful, for many peoplo were in ignorance of the real .position. Ho moved that a coram ittcc be formed to take evidence from old experienced settlers on tho river question with a view to ultimately devising a comprehensive schcmo for dealing with the matter by tho Central Board. The motion was carried unanimously. Tinquestion of instructing tho solicitor to proceed with tho Bill was discussed, and it was. decided' to hold it in abeyance until after noxt meeting. Tho members of the commission will tour the district on Tuesday, meeting at.Moeanee Bridge at 0 .a.m., and on Friday will hear cvidenco 011 the question. The keenest interest is being taken in tho flood problems and sufferers are making serious endeavours'to find a satisfactory solution.
