WELSH SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Welsh Society, was held at Uodber's Rconis last, evening, Air.' Rhys Watkius (president) •in the chair. The annual report mentioned that the society had at the.'beginning of the year the pleasure' of entertaining the Welsh Choir, whose singing brought' a bit of. Homeland,to the members of 1 the society. The .annua! conversazione was a most enjoyable one. , In the earlier part of. Hie year the meetings were fairly well attended, but latterly there'had been a' great falling-off in the • attendance. .It was a matter of regret that- there had been a lack of interest and a want of patriotism on >the part of Welshmen in Wellington. It had been said several limes that the reason for. this' was that the meetings were not interesting enough. They, however,, must not let the society die out, for they were really th« representatives of Wales in this part of the world. It was suggested that the business should be managed by a special committee, and meetings be held', to promulS ate the due .objects, of the society. They ad tried to have.St; David's Day recognised, and.to-have it placed on the statutes.. So far they had not met with success,' but.'they stOl hoped thai some day it'would receive the recognition that was its duo.'Thanks were, expressed to the assistance' .of Messrs. J.. L. Jones,. Bces,Watkins,and L. Gwilym, for thoir asistanco''and presence at the, meetings. The receipts 'for the year.'amounted.,to ! 'J!ls"lsS.* <; 6d:, and the expenditure to .£l3 lis. Bd.,leaving abalaiioe of £2 3s. lOd. ;' .On the motion of the president, the report and! balance-sheet, were adopted. A discussion took place as to ways and means of strengthening the membership of the society. It was decided that ladiea be admitted to membership. On the motion of Mr. Gwilym, it was resolved that ladies be admitted free. II was also decided that the .meetings b* restricted to four in the year; one to be held on St. David's Day.. The following officers were elocted for the ensuing year:—Patrons, Dr. James. Dr. Lloyd Clay, Messrs. D. Jones, E. W Jones, and Cowen ,• president, Mr. Hhys Wiitkins; .vice-president, Jfr. Robert Williams; treasurer, ' Mr. Evans; secretary, Mr. Barber;, trustees, Messrs. J.: L; Jones and J. .M;' Eoberts; auditors, Messrs. A. H. and'J: B. Thomas; directors, Messrs. H; J. Jones, J.' M. Koberts, J. B. Thomas, L. Gwilym, E. Lloyd. , A letter was received from the lion, secretaries of tho "Hen Wled Fy Nhadau" Memorial at Pontypridd, Wales," for financial support in arranging a national memorial to the authors of the national anthem," "Hen. . Wlad Py Nhadau," Evan James, author of, the words, and James James, composer of the music. On the suggestion of; Mr. Williams, it was decided to take up a shilling subscription in *id of the memorial.
