Compass, the winner of the last Grand National Hurdle Race, is now. in. work at Hawera,.. in preparation for . tho winter jumping events. ■ ( ' •'. / On Wednesday,' the annual race meeting' of the Manaia- Hack Racing Club itook; place on Mr.'J. Lothair was taken 'to: the Hastings meeting,-but was not started on either day. ;:■•■' - . •. ,■ the steeplechasers. El Dorado and Jack Pot, are both doing good work at Hastings.- The owner of Jack 'Pot hopes to' land him. at the post fit and well for the Wanganui Steeplechase next month.. ""Dolce, 1 who was treated to 'a spell consequent upon injuries -received whon competing at the Stratford meeting on January 1, is again m work at Hawera. She will make her reappearance at the Bgmont-meeting mext; : month, and will be ridden by.C. Jenkins... .-• •Irish Twist died at Hawera on Saturday, last. He, was a brown gelding by lngomar from Torori, by Musket from Peeress, and was ; nearly 20 years old at the time of his death. On the racing track, ho won numerous races for Mr. W; R. Tuck, of Wanganui, but he broke down when being prepared for a New Zealand Cup.' In recent years he had been useful in the hunting field. Mdllpond, who' is. suffering from a cold,' will hot be taken to the Blenheim meeting. Consequently '. the Porirua stable will'; be without. a' representative 'in : the hurdle events at the Marlborough Racing Club's meeting. It transpires that the injuries ■ sustained by Audax when schooling on Tuesday morning'are not very serious. The Karamu champion will be well in plenty of time' to complete- a preparation for the .Great Northern Steeplechase. ■"'■.-. - '.:'■';-...'.' Several horses: are being' shipped to Picton by the Arahura to-day to compete at the Marlborough races next week. ..Among-others space has been booked for Lares, Ahuapai, Penza, and Mon Ami from C: Pritchard's stable: Lady Medallist,' Laius, St. Felix, and Laco Collar, from Porirua j Sea Queen and Truganini, from J. Lowe's stablo; Ballarat and First Battery, from W. Davies's team; Repeat, from Feuding; Lamsdorff and Pearl Reef, from .Hastings ; and Waikaraka and Toanga, from Awapuni. Altogether there will be a first-class. lot of horses competing at Blenheim oh Wednesday and Thursday next." -..-., Trainer G. Price has done remarkably well since he took over the Highden team in July last.' Already ho has won no fewer than 'fourteen races, and only two of these wore ■ hack events. Tho stake money won by' his team is over £3000, and the races includo tho Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes, Sixth Manawatu Stakes, and the Hawke's Bay Stakes. When riding,-Price was one of the front-rank horsemen, and, apparently, he will bo equally successful as a trainer. Applications are invited for the position of handicapper to the West Coast Racing Clubs for the season 1910-1911. The remuneration is 200 guineas for tho'."sixteen, days. The following arc the clubs concerned:—Recfteu Jockey Club, Grcymouth Jockey Club, Hokitika Racing Club, Westport Jockey Club, and Kumara Racing Club. The success of 'Boanerges in the Hawke's Bay Stakes draws attention to his dam, Pnrera, who was purchased for a mere song at tho sale of Mr. H. Triedlandor's stud a few years ago. She was bought on the advico of J. H. Prosser, who was at that timo training for the late Hon. W. AV. Johnston. Parera then had produced a good winner in Pas Soul, and she was in foal to Pilgrim's Progress, and' had Nyland at-foot. At the samo sale Major■Cenernl Babington purchased Rumour for Mr. P. E. Baldwin. After the ar-

rival of Rumour »t Palmerston North, it wua disoovered that she was not in foal, and her owner immediately shipped bar back on a visit to Multiform. Polymorphous; resulted from the mating. Not many breeders would have sent Rumour to Multiform so late in the season, but Mr. Baldwin's judgment in this case proved sound. liituigh Hydrant is nominated in the at Wangariui, it may be that he will not compote, though lator jn the season..he will probably appear in cross country events. His owner is of opinion that he is too clever a jumper to fall at a fence, no mattor how big, but it is often the case that a olover hurdle jumper will refuse to look at a stout brush fence. The tiniu registered by Wimmora in tho Hack Hurdles at Hastings on Thursday makes Mr. Watt's horse appear more than useful, though to ha sure, tho .field that finished behind him contained nothing very formidable. At the commencement of the race there was a long run to the first hurdle, and tho Mernwee gelding soon had a business-like lead. Approaching tho first fence, Telford apparently thought that his mount, had too much -. pace on, and would not sight the-jump, so ho checked him by standing up, and running the bit through his mouth. This had the desired effect, and the jump was negotiated safely if not artistically. Opposite the stand Haurangi was with him, and both horses jumped together, the maiden candidate showing up well. I'Vom this out he jumped all his fences well,. albeit, a trifie .too carefully, but this blemish will be cured by racing, and there is every probability of the brown horse turning out as good aB his itdmirers claim.
