REDUCTION IN MUNICIPAL WORKS.
Sir, —I think I can show a way by which a. considerable amount oould bo saved. I have noticed that .in some of the principal streets of tho city that the concrete kcrbing is little more than five inches wide, whilst in streets of secondary importance it is fully eight inches wido; in some streets, Constable Street, for instance, there are various kinds of ,korbing—some is , wood of about three inches thick. This appears to be quite as useful as tho_ eight-inch concrete, and is therefore loft.. 1 should like to know why it is that,.if live-inch wide concrete kerbing is good enough for some of the principal streets, why oignkmch should be used, for secondary streets? Tho difference in cost between the eight-inch and fiveinch must bo very considerable, and surely the eight-inch i 4 not necessary, if the fiveinch is sufficient. Another thing that has puzzled, me is, why in some streets eightinch, as well ae five-inch, continuous kerbing is used,, and concrete block kerbing? 1 We certainly arc a oity of shrods. and patches.— I am, etc., ■■■'.■'■•■. .■-■■■:. ■'■■■:; SAVE WASTED June 21;
