HOBAHT-RYDNEY RUNNING. ,Two of the oldest of the Union Company's steamers—yiz., Wakatipu (Captain M'Beth, late of the Waikare) and Rotomahana (Captain H. J. ICell) —are at present engaged in the HobartSydney trade. It is' understood that Captain M'Beth is only temporarily 'in'command of the Wakatipu, and -will join ! the Paloona 1 as soon as that v.essel is ready. THE HINEMOA. Favoured with fine weather, the Government steamer'Hinemoa'was able to work the lighthouses yesterday; East Cape reported that she passed for Cuvier Lighthouse yesterday morning._ Accordingly, she should arrive in Auckland this afternoon, and after coaling, etc., leave to-morrow afternoon for the Three Kings in continuance of her cruise. A QUARTER'S SHIPPING. The inward oversea tonnage entered at the port of Wellington during the quarter, ending September 30 comprised 102,472 tons steam and 2015 tons sail, with crews aggregating 2G52. The figures for the corresponding quarter last year were:—lol,776 tons, steam; 2015 tons, sail; crews, 2558. The total in steam and sail for the Dominion was 314,393 tons. Of this 11,301 tons represents ships arriving in ballast. DOG ISLAND CABLE. This week's Gazette says that notice is hereby given that a telegraph cable has been laid from the west side of Sandy Point on mainland (about one cable oast of tho black marking north channel to Bluff Harbour) in a direct line to the landing-place on Dog Island north of the lighthouse. ; Masters of ships are cautioned against anchoring in the vicinity of this cable. MANAROA BREAKS DOWN. At 5.45 a.m. yesterday the Manaroa, 122 tons, Captain Hart, which ■ set out for Havelock and Pelorus Sounds on Wednesday, was compelled to return to port owing to a slight mishap to her machinery. She was effectually repaired yesterday, and at G. 40 p.m. again starts °n her regular trip. , The. mishap occurred while between the Brothers and Jackson Head, and Captain Hart brought his vessel back to port under easy steam. PASSENGERS ON THE ?APANUI. Heavy passenger booking at Home have necessitated the shipping companies to fit out their cargo boats for the reception of passengers. According to a. southern exchange the Isew, Zealand Shipping Company's ss Papanui, which has been taken off tlie direct route, is carrying a large number of passengers to the Dominion. She sailed from London for Dunedin early this month. In addition the vessel" has cargo for Dunedin, Tiinaru, and Lyttelton. OFFICERS' CHANGES. Press Association advice reports some imgortant changes of command in the Union ompany's service. Captain Gibb, of the Marania, is to remain in the Vancouver trade, and is to be placed in control of tho new Makura, which is due at Melbourne from the Old Country about next Monday. ' Captain Worrall, .who lias been in the Moeraki for somo time, transfers to the Marania. Captain Stott, now in the Waikare, will remain behind in Wellington, and will assume command of the Moeraki to-day. Captain M'Donald, of the shore staff, is bringing the latter vessel up from the south. Captain Lambert, whose vessel (tho Arahura) is in port here until Saturday, joined the Waikare last night, and takes the vessel as far as Lyttelton. Mr. F. R. Gamble, late of the Penguin, is at present in Dunedin awaiting orders. Captain Strang arrives from south this morning.

KARAMEA-WESTPORT MAILS. A Gazette notico this week announces that sealed tenders will be received at the Chief Post Office, Westport, until Tuesday, November 17, 1908. for the conveyance of mails, by steam vessel between Westport and Karamea thrice monthly, and between Westport and Little Wanganui monthly, for a period from December 1, 1908, to December 31, 1012. The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted. The attention of intending tenderers is directed to the terms and conditions of contract printed at the back of the tender-forms. Special conditions as to freight and fares may be ascertained, and forms of tender, with the terms iand conditions of contract, may bo procured from the Chief Posimasters at Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, and Westport. ' The successful tendorer will be required to show that he is in a position to satisfactorily carry out the service. The contractor whoso tender may be accepted must bo prepared to carry out tho sorvico according to a time-t.ablo framed by the Department. THE NIWARU. At 6 a.m. to-da.v the Tyser Line steamer Niwaru leaves Wellington for the Bluff. After loading at Dominion ports, she sails finally for London, from "Wellington, about November 22. THE ATHEtfIC. At 7.30 a.m. yesterday the Shaw-Savill liner Athenic arrived in Gisborne from Aucklalid. She was expected to sail for Wellington last .night, and leaves here on November 5 for London via ports. % THE MAPOURIKA. Early yesterday morning the Union Company's steamer Mapourika left Westport for Greymouth, and at 10 p.m. was timed to sail on the return voyage to AVellington, where she is due to-morrow evening. The Union Company's steamer Wairuna is reported to be loading coal at Newcastle for Auckland. Mr. H. A. Johnston, late mate of the brigantine Aratapu, qualified at Lyttelton on Tuesday, as master in the liome trade. The coastal steamer Defender, which left Wellington for Karamea, via Hokitika, yesterday, is to load timber at the former place for Wellington. ' It is reported that the barquo Marjory Glen is awaiting sailing orders at Dunedin. She recently discharged a Liverpool cargo at Wellington and Dunedin. At 10 p.m. on Wednesday the Union Company's steamer Poherua arrived in Greymouth from Wellington, and was fixed to sail at midnight yesterday oil the return voyage to Wellington. Yestorday the F.H.S. Line steamer Surrey arrived from Liverpool, and has on board 17S8 tons of cargo for discharge at-Wellington. The A. and A. Line steamers Kazembe and Clan Matheson, from New York, have 051 tons and 1218 tons respectively for discharge at Wellington. Cabled information has been received stating that the Australian Mail liner Foreric will leave San Francisco for Auckland on November 27, and that she will be followed by the s.s. Lord Softon, which is scheduled to sail on December 18.

An _ exchange reports that in Hie Patea Shipping Company's service, Captain Corby, of the liana, lias been promoted to the command of the Ivapiti.: Captain Jackson, of the liiripaka, takes the liana, and Captain Sawyers, formerly of the. lion, assumes charge of the liiripaka. According to the Christchurch "Press." the barque Ganymede, which is at present discharging hardwood at Lyttelton, is to be docked for sighting, and that she will probably be sold to be converted into a coal liulk. Her master, Captain Oliver, however, states that nothing definite has yet been settled regarding the..vessels future.

It is , reported that when the Waikare, which left last night for Hobart and Melbourne, via Southern ports;, arrjves at her destination, she will withdraw from the intercolonial' running in favour of ; the Vancouver liner • Marama, which was in this 'service last summer. The Waikare will'probably return to New Zealand direct from Melbourne.
