FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.
AN INTERESTING EXPERIMENT. "An interesting, experiment," wa3 tho commlnt.' 6f Education "Board', members on hearing the suggestions of the Education Department regarding free* school books read out at the-.bpqrd meeting, yesterday. Members were, hotfever;- : rather -doubtful whother the Government'had not underestimated the cost of the experiment, and there were other points to consider. Mr. Aitken wished to know whether the books were going to be given out, dirty and worn, to "other children at tho end of the twelve months. The custody and care of the books were important considerations. Captain M'Donald that the matter was purely one' of supervision. Mr. Vile thought that some definite information regarding the cost of the schema should be' forthcoming; _ " t •" Mr..-Aitken: '.Does this mean, free books, slates, penoils, and ink? < The Chairman: Oh, no; simply the books. •Mr. Fleming, the board's senior inspector, said that there were several points regarding the scheme that ought, to be carefully gone into. The Departmental list of school books authorised should be revised; there waß the question of the custody of the'books, their care, disinfection, and so on. , . The board finally resolved to refer the whole question to the inspectors for a' report.
